The Weekend Side Hustle: Design Once, Earn on Every Sale (Honest Version)

September 10, 2026 · LAIMA

"Design once, earn every sale" is a real thing, and it's also the kind of phrase that gets used to sell courses. So here's the unglamorous version: what you can actually do in one weekend, what it costs, what you earn per sale, and what happens to most designs.

Short answer: the design keeps existing after you make it, but nothing about this is passive. The making takes an afternoon. The sharing is the actual work, and it never stops being the work.

What "design once" actually means here

You make a design in the studio. You order it once and it ships to you. After that you can publish it and share a link — and if someone buys through that link, you earn 10% of the item price. The design doesn't expire, doesn't need restocking, and doesn't cost you anything to keep up. That's the "once" part, and it's genuinely true.

What isn't true: that it earns while you sleep. A link nobody sees earns nothing, forever. Read that as the price of entry, not a catch.

Saturday morning: pick three ideas (30 minutes)

Not one idea. Three, because you can't tell which one lands and neither can anyone else. Good places to look:

  • Your group chat — the phrase that gets repeated for months. This is the highest-hit-rate source by a wide margin, and we wrote a full walkthrough on it: turning group chat jokes into shirts.
  • Your job — the sentence everyone in your role says and nobody outside it understands.
  • Your town, neighborhood, or the small local thing only locals get.
  • Your hobby at its most specific: not "running," but what people say at mile 20.
  • Your pet, if the pet has a personality people already know about.

Skip anything with a brand name, a logo, a song lyric, or a movie character in it. Not a moral position — that stuff is somebody's trademark or copyright and it gets pulled.

Saturday afternoon: make them (an hour, generously)

Type the line, pick a style, and the artwork gets generated — you're describing a look, not operating design software. Make all three, look at them the next morning instead of the same night, and keep the one that still works. Start in the slogan studio, or if you'd rather do the whole thing on your phone, that walkthrough is here.

The part everyone skips: you have to buy one

You can only publish and share a design after you've ordered it yourself. That's deliberate — it keeps the community gallery full of things real people actually own instead of untested files.

So the real startup cost is one item: $35 for a tee, $39 oversized, $65 hoodie, $29 tote, $29 pillow, $25 poster. Free shipping to US addresses, 5–10 business days. That's the entire budget. No store fees, no subscription, no inventory, no design software. If it never sells a single unit, you spent $35 on a shirt you chose and you wear it.

The math, in real numbers

No projections, just the mechanics:

  • Commission is 10% of the item price actually paid, after discounts, before shipping and tax. A $35 tee pays $3.50.
  • If someone clicks your link and buys someone else's design, it's split — 5% to you for bringing them, 5% to the designer. If they design their own thing after clicking your link, the full 10% is yours.
  • The window is 3 days from the click, and last click wins.
  • You can't refer yourself, and refunded or cancelled orders reverse the commission.
  • Payouts go out from a $10 minimum balance — which is three tees, not three hundred.

So: ten sales is about $35, and roughly the point where the shirt you bought pays for itself. Full breakdown in the honest math post and the commission policy.

What usually happens

Most designs don't take off. That's not a failure mode, it's the normal outcome — the same way most posts don't go anywhere. Which is the argument for attempts over polish: nine designs made across nine weekends is nine chances, and you genuinely cannot predict in advance which one people respond to. Assume it won't be the one you're proudest of.

The realistic frame: this is not a replacement income and you should be suspicious of anyone telling you it is. It's a way to turn things you were already saying into $10–$50 checks, with a $35 downside and no ongoing cost.

The repeating weekend version

Once the first one exists, the loop is small: one new design every week or two, ordered when you'd have bought a shirt anyway, shared where you already talk to people. What compounds isn't income — it's the number of live links you have out there. Nine designs isn't nine times the money, but it is nine times the chances. If you'd rather not deal with any of the store side, print on demand without opening a store covers what that removes.

The thing worth noticing: you don't need a website, a warehouse, an audience, or a slot in anyone's recommended feed to put your own idea on a real object and sell it. The shelf usually decides what exists and the algorithm decides what you see — this skips both. You wrote the line, you picked the look, and it's yours either way.
