The Honest Math: How Much You Actually Make Selling a Custom Shirt

August 24, 2026 · LAIMA

Most "sell shirts online" content skips the part you actually want: the number. So here it is first, and then the uncomfortable context around it.

When someone buys through your design or your link, you earn 10% of the item price. That's it. No tiers, no bonus structure, no volume unlock.

What 10% is, per product

  • Tee — $35 → $3.50
  • Oversized tee — $39 → $3.90
  • Hoodie — $65 → $6.50
  • Tote — $29 → $2.90
  • Pillow — $29 → $2.90
  • Poster — $25 → $2.50

One wrinkle worth knowing: if someone clicks your link and then buys a different creator's design, the 10% splits — 5% to you, 5% to whoever made the design. You get the full 10% when they buy yours, or when they create their own from scratch after arriving through your link. The referral window is 3 days from the click, and last click wins. Cancelled or refunded orders reverse the commission. All of that is spelled out on the affiliate policy page.

What it costs you to start

Designing costs nothing. You can generate designs, publish them, and share links without spending a dollar. The only real cost is optional and it's this: buying one shirt for yourself, $35.

We'd argue you should. A design you've never seen printed is a design you can't photograph, can't wear, and can't honestly recommend. Nearly every sale that happens does so because someone saw the thing on a body, not on a mockup. So call your realistic startup cost $35 — the price of one tee — and no recurring anything.

Now the volume math

This is where honest content and hustle content part ways. Here's what different outcomes actually pay:

  • 3 tees sold: $10.50 — you've cleared the $10 minimum and can request a payout.
  • 10 tees: $35 — your own shirt is paid for.
  • 25 mixed items: roughly $90–$110 depending on product mix.
  • 100 items: roughly $350–$400.

Read that last line carefully, because it's the one that matters. One hundred sales — a genuinely good result for one design with no advertising budget — is a few hundred dollars, not a paycheck. Anyone showing you a screenshot that implies otherwise is either selling a course or running paid traffic they didn't mention.

The part nobody puts in the thumbnail

Most designs sell zero. Not few — zero. That's the normal outcome, and it's normal for everyone, including people who are good at this. The economics only work because failure is nearly free: you're out the cost of a shirt you're wearing anyway, and the design that flopped took you ten minutes.

What actually separates a design that sells from one that doesn't is usually not artistic quality. It's specificity. "Funny cat shirt" sells nothing. A line only people who work night shifts at a hospital would understand sells to the forty of them in a group chat. The narrower the in-joke, the higher the conversion — and the smaller the ceiling. That trade-off is the whole game.

Who this is actually worth doing for

It's worth your time if you're one of these:

  • You're already in a niche community — a hobby forum, a team, a fandom, a profession with its own vocabulary — and you know what its people find funny.
  • You're organizing something anyway (reunion, bachelorette, staff shirts) and would rather the commission cover your own order than go nowhere.
  • You post regularly somewhere and want a low-effort thing to point at, without building a store, holding stock, or handling shipping and returns.

It's not worth it if you're looking for reliable monthly income, or if the plan depends on one design going viral. Treat it as small money that arrives sometimes, from something you'd have made for fun regardless.

Getting paid

Balance builds as orders complete. Once you're at $10, you request a payout from your Earnings page. You can't refer yourself — buying through your own link earns nothing.

If you want to try it

Make one design for a group you're genuinely part of. Order it, wear it, photograph it on an actual person, and share the link where those people already are. Then judge the results honestly after a month instead of after a week.

Start at the design studio or the AI t-shirt maker — and if you want a slogan angle, the custom slogan shirt page walks through what tends to land. For the mechanics of selling without inventory, read how to sell t-shirts with no inventory; for distribution when your following is small, merch for small creators covers where to actually share the link.
