Matching Family Christmas Shirt Ideas (Plus the Two Order-By Dates That Matter)

September 20, 2026 · LAIMA

Two things sink matching family Christmas shirts: the design gets decided in mid-December, and nobody counts backwards from the date they're actually needed. Both are fixable now, in about fifteen minutes.

Below are 31 lines sorted by who's wearing them, plus the two order-by dates that matter — the card shoot in November, and Christmas morning itself.

The two dates, counted backwards

Everything is printed to order, so production and delivery run 5–10 business days with free shipping to US addresses. That's the part you can't compress, and December carriers are the slowest they are all year.

  • Shooting the holiday card? Most families shoot the first or second weekend of November so cards mail after Thanksgiving (Thursday, November 26 this year). For a shoot the weekend of November 7–8, order by Friday, October 23 — ten business days lands the box around November 6.
  • Wearing them Christmas morning? Christmas Day 2026 is a Friday. Order by Friday, December 4 and the box arrives around December 18, a week of buffer before anyone travels. December 10 is the absolute edge, and it's a gamble with zero room for a delay.

If you want both, one design covers both — shoot the card in them, then wear them again in December.

Shirts or pajamas? An honest answer

Matching pajamas get worn one morning and then live in a drawer. A tee gets worn again in January if the line isn't locked to December 25. So decide up front which one you're making: a one-morning joke (totally fine — it's the photo that matters) or something that survives into the new year. A line about the family, not the holiday, is what makes the difference.

Whole-family lines (everyone in the same shirt)

  • The Whole Loud Bunch
  • Assembled Again
  • Christmas at the [Last Name]s
  • Everybody Made It This Year
  • Established 1987 — Still Arguing About the Gravy
  • One House. Nine People. Two Bathrooms.
  • Home for the Long Weekend
  • The Annual Group Photo Situation

Role shirts (same design, one word changed)

This is the version that photographs best: identical font, identical colors, a different word per person. It reads as a set instead of a bulk order, and everyone gets their own joke.

  • Present Wrapper (Badly)
  • Cookie Quality Control
  • Official Light Untangler
  • Playlist Authority
  • Naps Between Courses
  • Arrived With Nothing
  • Dishes, Apparently
  • Youngest, Still Winning
  • In Charge of the Fire
  • Here for the Leftovers

The same role-split trick works for matching family Halloween shirts and for reunions and group trips — it's the one format that doesn't make teenagers refuse.

First Christmases, new names, new people

  • First Christmas, Loudest Person Here
  • Grandpa, Newly Promoted
  • Nana Since 2026 (or Pop, Abuela, Gigi — whatever the grandkids actually say)
  • Four Grandkids, Zero Rules
  • New Last Name, Same Seat at the Table
  • Christmas #1
  • Met Everyone Today

The quiet keepsake ones

  • December, Every Year
  • Same House, Same Week, Since 1994
  • All of Us, 2026
  • Everyone Home
  • The Year We Were All There
  • Winter, Together

These age best. A family name and a year in a good typeface reads like a keepsake rather than a party favor, and it doesn't expire on December 26.

The dog is family, put him in it

If the dog is in the card, he's in the shirts. Two ways that works: a line on everyone's tee ("Includes the Dog" / "The Dog Runs This House"), or his actual face turned into artwork on one shirt — see custom pet shirts or start from a photo in the pet studio.

Ordering for eleven people

  • No minimum order. Three shirts is fine, so is thirty.
  • One design, different products. A tee ($35 $29.90), an oversized tee ($39), a hoodie ($65) for the cousin who's always cold, or a tote ($29) for the person who refuses shirts entirely.
  • Nobody fronts the money. Share one design link and each person orders their own size and color.
  • The organizer can earn on it. Anything bought through your creator link earns 10% of the item price — your own order doesn't count, but nine relatives' tees is about $31 back. Details on the creator program page.
  • Ask for sizes, don't guess. Each item is printed for one person, so there are no change-of-mind exchanges.

When a shirt isn't the gift

For the grandparent who doesn't need another tee: last year's family photo turned into artwork as a poster ($25), or a pillow ($29) that stays out after the tree comes down. Same photo, different object, and it doesn't need a size.

A note about sizes across a whole family

Families are not one size curve. A 6'5" brother-in-law and a grandmother who's 5'0" both end up in a shirt that technically fits and doesn't really. That's a pattern-grading problem, not a body problem — standard sizing is cut to an average nobody actually is. What we can do today is print-on-demand on standard garments. Custom tailoring to your own measurements is what we're building next; it is not live, and there's no date. If you want to be on the waitlist, email support@laimadesign.com and say so — that's a list, not an order.

Why write your own line

Search "family Christmas shirt" and you'll get the same eight phrases, because a handful of companies decided years ago which jokes get manufactured and which ones get shown to you. The funniest thing about your family this year is something eleven people know and no factory will ever print. You're allowed to be the one who decides what the shirt says.

Pick a line above, or type the one that's been in the family group chat since August, and see it drawn as a design instead of typed: start in the studio, or read how custom slogan shirts work first. If you're doing couples or friends instead of the whole family, this list is the better starting point.
