Why AI Pet Portraits Don't Quite Look Like Your Dog (And How to Fix It)

October 06, 2026 ยท LAIMA

You upload a photo of your dog, a portrait comes back in a few seconds, and something is off. It is the right breed. It is the right color. The ears are roughly right. But it is not him. It looks like a stock dog wearing your dog's coat.

That gap is the most common complaint about AI pet art, and it is fixable. The fix is not a better model or a longer prompt โ€” it is one more round.

What "almost right" usually means

When people say the portrait does not look like their pet, it is rarely the whole face. It is one or two specific things. The most common ones:

  • The muzzle is too long or too short โ€” the model drew the breed average, not your dog's actual snout
  • The eyes are too far apart, too round, or too symmetrical
  • A white chest patch moved, shrank, or vanished
  • The eyebrow dots on a black dog got lost in the shading
  • One floppy ear got "corrected" to match the other
  • The grey around an older dog's muzzle was smoothed away โ€” they got de-aged
  • An underbite, a snaggletooth, or a permanently sideways tongue disappeared
  • A heterochromatic (two-colored) eye came back as a matching pair
  • A tabby's forehead M or a cat's nose freckle got generalized
  • Fur texture turned glossy and uniform, so a scruffy terrier reads as a show dog
  • The expression is wrong โ€” your anxious, slightly suspicious dog came back serene
  • A scar, a notched ear, or a cloudy eye from a rescue history got erased

Notice the pattern: the model smooths toward the average. Everything that makes your pet identifiable is, statistically, a deviation โ€” so it is exactly what gets ironed out first.

Why one-shot tools stay wrong

Most pet-portrait sites generate once and hand you the result. If the ears are wrong, your options are to pay anyway, start over from scratch, or leave. There is no mechanism for "that, but the ears are bigger."

Commissioning a human artist is the other end of it: genuinely good results, and also three to five days of waiting, usually one or two revision rounds, and payment up front. If round two is still not right, you are often out of revisions.

Neither matches how people actually judge a portrait of someone they love. You do not know what is wrong until you see it โ€” and then you know instantly.

The fix: name the one thing that is wrong, and regenerate

In the LAIMA pet studio, the preview comes back in seconds and you can refine it in plain language as many times as you want. Change one thing, look, change the next thing. There is no revision limit, no sign-up to try, and nothing to pay until you have something you would actually wear.

Useful things to type, from the kinds of corrections that actually move a portrait:

  • "Make the ears bigger and more upright"
  • "Longer, narrower snout"
  • "Keep the white patch on the chest, shaped like a triangle"
  • "Leave the grey fur around his muzzle โ€” he is twelve"
  • "One ear up, one ear folded over"
  • "Make her look slightly annoyed, not happy"
  • "Scruffier fur, less shiny"
  • "Left eye blue, right eye brown"
  • "Tongue out to the side"
  • "Higher contrast, darker background"
  • "Zoom out so the chest and front legs are visible"
  • "Thicker outlines, less detail behind him"

Two or three rounds is typical. The first pass gets the species and the color; the refinements get your pet.

Start from a photo that gives the model something to work with

Half of the "it does not look like him" problem starts at the input. The short version: shoot in daylight, get down to their eye level, fill the frame with the head and shoulders, skip hats and app filters, and make sure the marking you care about is actually visible in the shot. We went deeper on this in what makes a photo great for AI art.

Pick a style that keeps what you like about them

We hand-tuned six styles specifically to hold on to an individual animal's features rather than applying a generic filter:

  • Streetwear box logo โ€” bold, flat, high-contrast. Best for a dog with a strong silhouette or one dramatic marking
  • Retro โ€” warm, slightly faded print feel. Flatters senior pets and grey muzzles
  • Japanese illustration โ€” clean line work with soft color. Excellent at keeping an odd expression intact
  • Watercolor โ€” soft edges, loose washes. The gentlest option, and the usual pick for memorial pieces
  • Royal portrait โ€” your pet in formal costume, played straight. Works best on a face that already looks dignified or deeply unimpressed
  • Abstract โ€” shape and color over realism. Good for a cat who will not hold still long enough for a clean reference photo

If the style is close but the likeness slipped, switch styles and refine again โ€” the same photo reads differently through each one. Our five-style walkthrough shows how one photo changes across them.

Then put it somewhere

Once it looks like them, the same design goes on a tee ($35 $29.90 limited-time), an oversized tee ($39), a hoodie ($65), a tote ($29), a pillow ($29), or a poster ($25). Our tees are Comfort Colors 1717 โ€” 6.1 oz, garment-dyed, 100% ring-spun cotton, a heavyweight blank rather than the thin 4 oz shirt most print-on-demand sellers default to. Shipping is free to US addresses and orders arrive in 5โ€“10 business days. A poster or pillow is often the better call for a memorial piece; a tee is the better call for a gift.

The part that matters

A shelf of pet merchandise is built from a few dozen breed illustrations somebody licensed, and the closest match to your dog is a guess made by a company that has never seen him. The point of being able to refine is that nobody else decides when it is close enough โ€” you look at it, you say what is wrong, and you keep going until it is the one in your house.

Start with one photo and give it two rounds. That is usually the whole difference.
